Dear fellow web users,
I need some assistance. With Firefox 2.x I used GBS and loved it. I could add links to my toolbar or in a folder and it showed up on any other computer I used. It was awesome. Since switching to Firefox 3 I have not been able to find a good replacement for GBS. A friend recommended Weave but it is just not working for me. Here are some of my issues with it:
- When I add a toolbar link it does not get replicated.
- It is a freakin’ hog. On my Windows box at work it eats 99% of my CPU until it is done. Until that time the browser is unusable. The results on my Linux boxes is not too different from that.
- If you forget your password you are out of luck. There is now way at this time to change it. You have to register a new account.
So my question is this. What do you use that acts as a good / usable replacement for GBS?
ps. Before the comments come in about Weave being a prototype … I already know that. I just want something that works well now.
Today marks the 2 year anniversary of my dad’s death. There has not been a day in the last 2 years that I have not thought about him at some point. He was not only my dad but one of my very best friends. I talked with him about everything. It is especially hard going to work because I now work where he did for about 20 years. I never had a chance to work with him here but I often imagine what it would have been like to meet up with him for lunch or just pass in the hallways.
My kids are getting older every day and my goal is to make sure they know who their gramps was and just how much he loved them. My youngest was only 3 when my dad died so helping him remember is pretty tough.
I am thankful that I have sisters that I can talk with to help me remember even the silliest and smallest things about dad. My biggest regret is that I have no home videos of him. I would love to have a tape or a video that has his voice on it just to play from time to time.
Things that I got from dad:
- Love of Christ
- Passion for computers
- Sense of humor (not sure this one is so good 😉 )
Thing I hope not to get:
- Bald head (sense of humor kicking in there)
- The cancer that killed him
Dad you are now and will always be loved and missed.
This is the first in a 2 part post. Today is was a very good and happy day. Today is the 11th wedding anniversary with my wonderful wife. Technically yesterday was the end of the 11th year and today is the beginning of the 12th. I am so blessed to have been give a woman as fantastic as her to spend my life with. She has give me 3 fantastic kids too. If you didn’t know already that is where the nickname that I use online comes from. etank = Eric, TJ, Ariana, Noah, Kim. The fantastic wife in that list happens to be Kim. I chose this nickname as a way of honoring my wife and kids and also having my family (in a way) with me where ever I am. Even online.
To my wife (if only you read my blog), I love you absolutley. You mean so much to me. These last 11 years have been great. Sure we have had our tough times through the years but we have always stood together and saw it through. God has blessed our family in so many ways and I know that He will continue to do so into the future. 11 years down but we are just getting started.
I ❤ U always.
part 2 will be here on June 27th
On Saturday the 14th 6 of us from the BGLUG (BlueGrass LUG) met at Starbucks for a good time of geeking out and drinking coffee. If you weren’t there then you really missed out. We talked about just about everything from old (very, very old) computers to programming. We also learned that a couple of the members have enough old computer stuff in their houses combined to start a small museum.
The only thing that did not go as planned was the free wifi that we were supposed to have from Starbucks / AT&T was not working. We offered to fix it for them but they said that we were not allowed back where the system was. I had planned on doing a presentation on conary packaging but never did get around to it. Of course not having internet access didn’t help the matter at all.
NOTE TO STARBUCKS / AT&T: If you are going advertise free wifi then it should be working. If we had known beforehand that it was broken that day then we would probably have gone somewhere else
Our local LUG, BGLUG, is having a meeting tomorrow at Starbucks from 2:00 – 4:00 PM EDT on Winchester Rd. If you are in the area and are interested in dropping by then feel free to join us. It should be a pretty good time of geeking out and drinking coffee. If you have a Starbucks card you even get 2 hours of free wifi 🙂
Twitter IM access has been down for me for a while now. Because of this I have started using jaiku more. Something I really like about jaiku is that it has an IRC feel to it. You can create channels for users to follow. This works the same way as following a user. When you want to post to a channel just preface it with a #. So for instance if I wanted to tell everyone following the Foresight jaiku channel something I could do “#foresight packaging some cool new app for everyone.”. Anyone following that channel would get the update. There are lots of channels already created too. I looked and I have seen quite a few for Ubuntu already. If a channel does not exist yet then it is very easy to create it.
You can follow me (if you want) at http://etank.jaiku.com/. If you do not have a jaiku account then let me know. I currently have 19 invites left and I can send you one while supplies last.
